Advancement at SIS Advancement is a strategic, integrated method of managing relationships to increase understanding and support among an educational institution’s key constituents, including alumni and friends, government policymakers, the media, members of the community and philanthropic entities of all types.The Advancement function at SIS was set up in October 2018. The team is small but dedicated and we work collaboratively, sharing ideas and best practice with the aim to create an advancement programme of internationally high standard.

Position summary: The communications officer plays a key role in implementing a communications programme to support the advancement of SIS. The post holder provides overall editorial control for school communications, ensuring that key messages are delivered in a consistent, professional tone of voice that will raise SIS’s reputation among current and potential stakeholders. The communications officer is part of the Advancement team, and works collaboratively within the team, sharing ideas and integrating communications across offline and online platforms. 

Key areas of responsibility

Work with the Advancement Director to develop and deliver an annual communications plan to support the overall SIS strategic plan.

Update SIS materials in line with new brand guidelines

Brief and work with creatives (e.g. graphic designers, photographers, editors) to deliver high quality materials for online and offline publications.

Work with external printers to manage the production process and ensure that material is produced on time, on budget, and to a high quality

Proactively seek out stories from across the school which will highlight the work of the school within the SIS community. Work closely with faculty to follow up and obtain information and materials to support SIS communications.

Effectively expand and use social media as a means of communication.Update social media channels frequently to ensure increased engagement.

Organise photography for key events in the school’s calendar and liaise with students and staff to gather the relevant details for the website, school newsletters and other promotional material.

Maintain and manage a well-catalogued photographic library for promotional use

Manage the use of hallway bulletin boards and flat screen displays to ensure effective communication with specific constituencies.

Provide internal guidance to staff on preparation of notice board displays, flyers and other offline and online materials. Ensure compliance with SIS Style Guide (eg that school logos, fonts and colours are used appropriately).

Coordinate, manage and draft copy for the production of the school’s annual review.

Develop creative, well-written material (and edit copy written by others) for a variety of media such as the website, events, fundraising communications and newsletters.

Edit the school’s website, ensuring that content is up-to-date and on message.

Edit and publish the school’s electronic newsletters. Manage subscription records in the school’s CRM system.

Assist the PTA at SIS with communications-related matters.

Keep records of communication up-to-date in the school’s CRM system. Develop own skills to be able to utilise the system’s different areas of functionality.

Keep up to date with professional best practice and promote best practice throughout the team and the school.

In addition to the above areas of responsibility the position may require other reasonable duties relating to the scope of the position. The post holder will at times be required to work outside of normal office hours and/or weekends. Additional duties as well as working outside of office hours should be authorised by the Advancement Director.

Qualifications, attributes and experience

Proven track-record of successfully working with communications, preferably within an educational setting

Very high level of written and spoken English is required, additional languages a plus

Storytelling

Experience of driving engagement on social media platforms

Willingness and ability to work on a number of simultaneous projects

International background or experience desirable

The ability to establish rapport with adults and students.

The ability to work effectively in a team

The ability to function effectively under pressure.

The ability to show initiative and work independently.
